Summer at COMMON: Create & Perform Session 1

Program Dates: June 12 - 24, 2023

Location: COMMON, 1535 N. Dayton St. Chicago, IL 60642

Tuition: $900 (If invited to attend, $250 due at the time of registration on May 12, 2023)

Terence Marling (Artistic Director of COMMON) and Braeden Barnes (Artistic Director of Symbiosis Arts) invite pre-professional and experienced contemporary dancers to join a two-week creative intensive at COMMON.

Dancers will be given daily technique classes and the unique opportunity to participate in the creation of an evening of new work with both choreographers. This intensive offers serious contemporary dancers the chance to elevate their technical training while experiencing a creative process similar to a professional environment. The two-week creative period culminates in a public performance at COMMON.


Daily Schedule

The workshop will be held at COMMON (1535 N. Dayton St. Chicago, IL 60642) on Monday - Friday from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

The performance schedule on Saturday, June 24th will differ. Please expect to be available from 2 PM - 10 PM on this date.


FREE video submissions will be accepted until further notice.

About Terence Marling

Terence (Terry) Marling has choreographed for more than twenty years. He has created works for Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Hubbard Street 2, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Robert Moses Kin, and Orange County Ballet Theatre, among many others. Terence’s approach to choreography is collaborative and includes improvisation. His work contains humor, subtlety, and a wide dynamic range.

About Braeden Barnes

Braeden Barnes is an award-winning choreographer. His choreography has been featured across the U.S. at companies in Chicago, Las Vegas, New York City, and Atlanta. His work has won the first place “Audience Choice Award” at REVERBDance Festival in New York, as well as first place for “Best Choreography” at YAGP. He has choreographed for numerous companies including Nevada Ballet Theatre, Cirque Du Soleil, Visceral Dance Chicago, Waterstreet Dance Milwaukee, A&A Ballet, Common Conservatory, and New Dances: a collaboration between Danceworks and Thodos Dance Chicago.

 

This program has a maximum capacity of 15 dancers. Pre-professional and experienced dance artists of all backgrounds and practices are encouraged to audition. Artists must be at least 18 years of age to participate and be fully vaccinated at the time of the intensive. Dancers will be asked to partner and make contact with other artists throughout the process.

All dancers in the program will be involved in a performance on June 24, 2023, at 7:30 PM. Dancers will equally split all performance ticket sales.

COMMON is housed in an ADA-compliant space, and we encourage artists with specific accessibility requirements to send us an email when they register to audition.
